Artist Statement: The Philosophy of Motionism

As an artist, I have always been captivated by the intrinsic dynamism of life. Every moment, every interaction, every movement holds within it a unique narrative, an ephemeral beauty that is often overlooked. Through my work, I strive to capture this fleeting essence, and it is this endeavor that has given birth to my artistic movement: Motionism.

Motionism is the philosophy of embracing the fluidity and perpetual motion of existence. It is a celebration of the unseen forces and the constant flux that shape our reality. By harnessing the transformative qualities of water, I am able to create pieces that are alive with energy, each brushstroke a testament to the interplay between control and spontaneity.

Using watercolor and acrylic mediums, I explore the boundaries between the abstract and the concrete. Water, as a medium, embodies the essence of change and movement. It flows, merges, and reacts in ways that are both predictable and surprising, much like the experiences that shape our lives. This unpredictability is at the heart of Motionism. It allows me to capture the raw, unfiltered emotions of a moment, creating a visual diary that speaks to the transient nature of human experience.

In my works, I aim to convey a sense of motion and depth, inviting the viewer to lose themselves in the ebb and flow of color and form. Each piece is a journey, an exploration of space and emotion that defies repetition. The use of water as a primary tool enables me to depict not just the physical act of movement, but the emotional and psychological currents that drive it.

My art is a reflection of my own journey – from the structured discipline of my time in the United States Air Force during Operation Desert Storm to the free-flowing creativity I discovered at the Art Students League of New York. Overcoming the challenges that many servicemen face upon returning home, I found solace and expression in art. Each piece I create is imbued with the lessons, triumphs, and tribulations of my life, forming an emotional narrative that resonates with those who view it.

Motionism is more than a technique; it is a way of seeing and understanding the world. It is an acknowledgment of the ever-changing, ever-moving nature of our existence. Through my art, I hope to inspire others to embrace the fluidity of life, to find beauty in the motion, and to recognize the unique story within every fleeting moment.
